After the madness of Christmas (here's hoping the turkey didn't get the better of you) and, for the most part, the whole year, the New Year probably couldn't come soon enough. Despite that it's been a stellar year here at Wii UK, so thanks to all of you who've been visiting both the main site and the forum over the past 365 days, we owe you one, especially James for providing us the opportunity to use the site. Have a great start to 2008, and make sure you DO drink responsibly, we don't want vomit on the carpet now do we. Why not welcome in the new year by visiting the forum and having a chat.

Manhunt 2 not in the clear

The developers of tabloid favourite, Manhunt 2, have managed to win an appeal to force the BBFC to take another look at the game. Rockstar, who have already suffered two classification refusals from the British Board of Film Classification, clearly see this as some kind of victory, stating the following: "We are pleased that the decision of the VAC has recognised that Manhunt 2 is well within the bounds established by other 18+ rated entertainment." Er, no, they haven't. They've recognised that there is a chance that the game conforms to the very clear definition of what should be classified, but they certainly haven't effectively passed it. The decision lies with the BBFC, and relies solely upon whether or not they choose to contest the appeal - an appeal against an appeal, if you like. I'm with them on this one. I find Rockstar's primitive promotional tactics fairly deplorable, albeit successful. The BBFC have very strict guidelines, and they know what they're doing. The whole point of the classification refusal is that Manhunt 2's focus on violent killing is seemingly arbitrary. I'm getting sick of people making spurious comparisons to violent films, such as war films - violence in those instances is at the very least in context, and rarely condoned. Manhunt 2, according to the BBFC, focuses on and rewards the player for such killing. That's different. So stop bitching about 'nanny state' and all that kind of bollocks - if you really want a game that, in all likelihood, will turn out to be dazzlingly mediocre, import it from the continent. Part of me hopes the BBFC give Rockstar another kick in the teeth. We'll find out soon, no doubt. Have your say on this subject in our forums. Stay tuned for more news.

Virtual Console Friday

Another Friday rolls around, and sadly another Friday with only two Virtual Console games added to the roster. Baseball Stars II Neo Geo, 900 points Despite the fact that the 'stars' featured in this game are probably pushing up daisies by now, this one might be worth a look if you're into your baseball. The Dynastic Hero Turbo Duo CD-ROM, 800 points This one is a bit more interesting - not only is the main character described in the press release as 'titular' ( excellent use of a not-often-used word ), the game was also first released on a CD-ROM based system, meaning the overall quality should be pretty good. Who remembers the Phillips CD-i? Let us know if you pick either of these up by posting on our forums. Stay tuned for some reviews towards the end of the weekend.

Well, that's half true - I make an appearance. It doesn't credit anyone interviewed so see if you can figure out which gurning imbecile is myself. Here's the video - it's got some nice footage of the game ( which we've previewed here ): Click here to download the Mario and Sonic video.
Virtual Console update

It's Friday, and as such time for another Virtual Console update from Nintendo. Here's the updates for this week: The King of Fighters '94 900 points, Neo Geo Whoever it is presumably isn't the King anymore, but this aging Neo Geo game is supposedly one of the 'greatest combat games ever.' That's quite horridly incorrect, but might be worth a look nonetheless. Bubble Bobble 500 points, NES This is much more like it - two pixellated dinosaurs! I'm a big fan of dinosaurs, particularly those involved in strange incongruous activities such as trapping monsters in bubbles. If you like puzzlers, this might be worth a look. If Nintendo are to be believed every Virtual Console release heralds the arrival of the 'greatest game ever,' at least for that particular week - what do you think? Have your say on our forums. Stay tuned for more news.

Finally squeezed onto the webserver ready for consumption, our hands-on extended playtest of Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games. We spent a good few hours on the game at the Wii Flat the other week courtesy of Sega, so if you want to know whether or not we thought it was a load of tosh, follow this link: Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games: Extended Playtest Conversely, if you'd rather not know if we thought it was a load of tosh, you can always follow this link: Clickety-click We'll be bringing you a full review of the game whenever it arrives, so stay tuned for that, and for more - Wii UK hasn't died.
Mario & Sonic coming soon

It's only a matter of weeks now until Mario & Sonic at The Olympic Games is released, the first time the two famous protagonists will be featured in a game alongside each other. Sega were nice enough to invite us along to play the game for a few hours last week, along with some other journalists. Oh, and Mario & Sonic themselves. I'm not joking, they were scary. We'll have a full run-down of the game, including screenshots and rambling opinionated gibberish, very soon indeed. From the way things are going it looks like Wii UK might well be making a transformation - instead of reporting every single piece of largely uninteresting news, we'll be posting articles, reviews, and hands-on rambles instead. The site will be updated less frequently, but with a bit of luck it might be a whole lot more interesting. Or not. We'll see how it goes. Stay tuned.

Metroid Prime 3 shortage?

Some of the cheeky scamps over at NeoGaf are reporting that European stock levels of Metroid Prime 3 are set to be unusually low, prompting concern. According to these reports, currently unconfirmed by Nintendo, stock of the eagerly-awaited space shooter is so tight that Nintendo 'considered' a delay in order to ease pressure. Quite how this information emerged is unknown, and it's also completely unconfirmed, but if nothing else these rumours should serve as a reminder - pre-order the game unless you want to risk being disappointed. I can see this being completely correct, however. Nintendo don't seem to be in any rush when it comes to increasing production of Wii and it's games - quite rightly, as the console continues to be a massive sales success. Why make more when you can create more demand by not increasing production? Crafty buggers. Stay tuned for more news.
